Martyred Intellectuals Day Friday

DHAKA: The nation is set to observe the Martyred Intellectuals Day on Friday (December 14) in a befitting manner.

The day is observed on 14 December in Bangladesh to commemorate the systematic execution of Bengali pro-liberation intellectuals during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 by the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, most notably the Al-Badr.

The great sons of the soil were killed with an evil motive to cripple the Bengali nation just two days before the country earned its victory.

The President and the prime minister will place floral wreaths at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Memorial at Mirpur in the morning.

Later, Members of martyred and freedom fighters will place wreaths at Martyred Intellectuals Memorial.

Then, people from all walks of life will pay their respects to the memorial.

On the eve on the day, President M Abdul Hamid issued separate messages paying profound respect to the great sons of the country on the occasion of the Martyred Intellectuals Day.

Bangladesh Television and private television channels will air special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.

To observe the day, ruling Awami League and other political parties have also chalked out different programmes.

The ruling party is scheduled to arrange a meeting at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh on Friday afternoon, marking the day.
