Quader seeks EC attention over Tarique’s video conference

DHAKA: Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader has sought the attention of the Election Commission on whether convicted fugitive BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman can take part in the electoral process through video conferencing.

Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, made the call while talking to reporters at secretariat on Sunday (Nov 18).

BNP started interviewing their nomination aspirants for the 11th parliamentary polls on Sunday morning. Reports were published in news media that BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman, who is staying in London, has joined the interview through video conference. Tarique along with his mother BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been convicted in Zia Orphanage and Charitable Trust graft cases.

When asked about the matter, Quader said, “I am seeking attention of the nation and the EC on whether a convicted fugitive can do such thing or not.”

He also said AL-led 14-party alliance nominated candidates’ name will be announced within 4-5 days. Alliance partners will be given 60-65 seats among the 300 parliamentary seats.
