Polls can’t be deferred for even an hour: AL HT Imam briefing reporters on polls deferral

DHAKA: Awami League’s national election management committee co-chairman HT Imam said the upcoming 11th JS polls has already been deferred by the Election Commission (EC) and it can not be delayed again for not even an hour.

The ruling party said it after Jatiya Oikyafront met with the EC on Wednesday afternoon (Nov 14) demanding deferral of the polls for more three weeks.

HT Imam said, “Do those who are demanding deferral have other motives behind it? Because it seems they are trying to foil the election.”

The EC recently deferred the Election Day to Dec 30 from Dec 23 following opposition parties’ demand for it.

Earlier opposition BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed that foreign observers will not be able not come here due to EC’s announcement of the polls schedule in a short time. BNP affiliated Jatiya Oikyafront are pushing the EC to delay the election again.

In response to Fakhrul’s reasoning of polls deferral, HT Imam said, “We are an independent sovereign state and the Election Day is our decision to make. It is simply hilarious to delay polls just so that some foreign observers won’t make it in time.”

He also added that foreign observers will of course come for polls. Many foreign observes came during Dec 29 election in 2008 and there was no problem back then.
