No scope to amend Road Transport Act 2018: Quader

DHAKA: Despite Transport Workers’ 48-hour countrywide strike, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said there is no scope for amendment to the newly passed Road Transport Act 2018 before election.

“There is no question to make changes to the law under the current government as we have only two days left prior to the end of last JS session,” he said urging transport workers to withdraw the strike.

The Minister, also ruling AL general secretary, said it to reporters in secretariat on Tuesday (October 23).

The Road Transport Act 2018 was passed by voice vote in parliament on Sep 19 after it had been approved by the cabinet on Aug 6 following mass student protest demanding safe roads for all.

According to the newly passed law, provision of death penalty can be sentenced to a driver if he is proven guilty of murder in a road accident. Transport workers have rejected some provisions of the law and called a 48-hour countrywide strike on October 28 with an 8-point demand including making amendment to the law.

Quader said, “Discussions were made with transport workers and leaders before passing the law. However, if necessary, changes can be made after the election when a new government will be formed.”
