SYLHET:  Transport workers called for a countrywide strike on October 28 and 29 demanding eight-point charter including amendment to the Road Transport Act 2018.

Uthman Ali, central general secretary of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation came up with the announcement at a rally organized at Sylhet Central Bus Terminal on Saturday (October 20).

Uthman Ali said, “Workers must not drive vehicles with hanging rope around their necks. Workers will go for a 96-hour strike if the bill is not cancelled by October 27. However, if the bill is not cancelled even after that strike, an indefinite period of strike will be called for without considering welfare of the state.

Road Transport Bill-2018 has the provision of death sentence for drivers if they deliberately kill while driving. The bill also proposes punishment of five years' imprisonment for causing death of a person by reckless driving.
