DHAKA: Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police detained Mercantile Bank director and Chattogram-based SA Group chairman Md Shahabuddin Alam in Dhaka over loan scam.

CID inspector Ashraful Islam said he was detained from a hotel in city’s Gulshan area around 12:00pm Wednesday (October 17).

Ashraful Islam, inspector of the Criminal Inspection Department of Police, has confirmed The Daily Star that he has been arrested from Gulshan area in the city.

He said Shahabuddin has been facing several dozen criminal cases and one lean defaulting case filed by private Prime Bank Ltd. SA Group is also one of the largest loan defaulters of the country.

He will be produced before a court for permission of questioning, the inspector added.
