SIRAJGANJ: A mobile court in Chauhali Upazila of Sirajganj district jailed 8 fishermen for violating the ongoing ban on hilsa fishing in the rivers of Meghna, Padma, and Jamuna.

An executive magistrate of the mobile court and acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Anisur Rahman sentenced 8 fishermen to 7 days of imprisonment on Wednesday (October 17).

Earlier, the drives were conducted in various parts of the upazila in the Jamuna River starting from Tuesday night (October 16) to Wednesday morning (October 17).

A total of 25 current fishing net and 100 kg hilsa fish were seized. Later, the net was burnt while fish were distributed to an orphanage, the UNO said.

The 22-day ban on catching and selling hilsa for safe spawning of the fish started on October 7.
