Journalist Farhad murder: HC commutes death sentence to life

DHAKA: The High court has commuted the death sentences of two convicts to life imprisonment in the sensational case filed over the murder of journalist Farhad Khan and his wife.

The HC bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice ASM Abdul Mobin passed the order on Tuesday (October 16).

Earlier on Oct 11, the same HC bench fixed today for delivering verdict after concluding hearing death references and appeals by the convicts.

Lawyer Mansurul Huq and Abdul Matin Chowdhury moved for the convicts while deputy attorney general Moniruzzaman Rubel moved for the state in court.

The convicts are- Nazimuzzaman Yon, a nephew of the slain journalist Farhad Khan, and Razu Ahmad, a friend of Yon.

Farhad Khan, 60, senior assistant editor of Bangla daily Janata, and his wife Rahima Khanam, 55, were killed in their rented flat in Nayapaltan area in the capital on January 28, 2011.

Following the killings, Abdus Samad Khan, younger brother of Farhad, filed a case with Paltan Police Station accusing unknown persons.

On October 11, 2012, a Dhaka court gave death sentence to two persons for murdering journalist Farhad and his wife Rahima.
