KHAGRACHHARI: A district court on Monday (Oct 15) sentenced death penalty to a man for burning his wife to death by smearing petrol on her over dowry in Khagracchari.

Judge Mohammad Ismail of Khagracchari women and children repression prevention tribunal passed the order with Tk 50,000 fine for the convict. 

The court also acquitted four other accused persons in the case as the prosecution failed to produce enough evidence against them. 

The death row convict is Mizanur Rahman, 22, son of one Erfan Ali, hailing from Sindukcchari area in Guimara upazila of Khagracchari.

According to case statements, Miznur set his wife, Salma Akhter, 20, afire by smearing petrol on her body over demand of dowry. Salma sustained 80 percent burn injuries and succumbed to injuries after undergoing treatment for five months. Later, victim’s elder brother Nuruzzaman filed a case with Guimara police station.
