'Extremist' leader killed in Tangail 'shootout'

TANGAIL: A suspected leader of a banned extremist outfit ‘Purbo Bangla Communist Party’ was killed in an alleged gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Tangail on early Monday (October 14).

The deceased, identified as Sharif alias Farhad, 33, district commander of the outfit, son of late Chand Miah alias Noyon Gazi, hails from Gala village under sadar upazila.

RAB-12 CPC-3 Company Commander Rabiul Islam told Banglanews: “Being tipped-off, a team of RAB launched a drive in Dainya Chowdhury Madhyapara area. Sensing RAB presence, the extremist group opened fire on them, which resulted in a gunfight.”

“After a while, Sharif got injured and Rab sent him to Tangail General Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead,” Rabiul Islam added.

Sharif was accused in 5 cases including murder and robbery, according to RAB official.
