MUNSHIGANJ: The engineers have started installing the slabs for the broad gauge single railway track on the bottom deck of Padma Multipurpose Bridge.

The construction is being run by Padma Bridge Rail Link Project (PBRLP).

The first slab was placed on 7F superstructure of the bridge’s Janjira part on Tuesday (Sept 25).

Each of the spans will have 32 slabs; 8 on each of the 4 sections.

So, as many as 312 slabs will be installed on the track, in total.

Apart from having a four-lane road traffic, the bridge is supposed to operate trains from Mawa to Bhanga from the day-1 over Padma Multipurpose Bridge.

This will provide a vital linkage between the south western part of the country and Dhaka in the centre. The new rail link Dhaka – Mawa – Janjira – Bhanga – Jessore via Padma Multipurpose Bridge is part of corridor 7 as per Railway Master Plan.

However, around 750 meters of the bridge is now visible after placing the fifth span (7F) of the bridge on the pillar no. 41 and 42 on June 29.

A total of 41 massive spans will be positioned on 42 pillars of the 6.15-kilometer-long bridge. The main structure of the double-storey bridge is being constructed by concrete and steel.
