Killers, corrupt elements unite against govt: PM Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

DHAKA: Mentioning that killers, money-launderers and usurers forged unity against the Awami League government, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the country will be destroyed if they could come to power.

The premier was addressing a civic reception hosted in her honour by expatriates Bangladeshis living in New York City of the USA on Sunday (Sep 23). Earlier, Sheikh Hasina reached New York to attend the General Assembly of United Nations.

The premier harshly criticized the formation of a new anti-government alliance led by Dr Kamal Hossain and Dr Badruddoza Chowdhury and wondered how they will fight corruption by keeping corrupt men with them.

She wondered that former caretaker government adviser Barrister Moinul Hosein and BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed too lent their support to the new alliance and recalled that both were convicted previously in graft charges.

PM also alleged that Dr. Kamal Hossain and Dr. AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury along with BNP leaders are trying to oust the government.

AL Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and AL’s Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap spoke at the function held at Hotel New York Hilton Midtown here on Sunday evening, while US chapter AL President Dr Siddikur Rahman in the chair.

Earlier on Sep 22, Gano Forum president and Jatiya Oikya Prokriya Convener Dr Kamal Hossain held a rally in Dhaka and said that national unity is necessary to establish people’s voting rights.

Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh president and Jukto Front chairman Dr. AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir among other BNP leaders joined the rally as united against the government.
