BARISAL: Five people were detained and also two policemen were closed after Jalla union parishad (UP) chairman Bishwajit Haldar Nantu was gunned down by some unknown miscreants in Ujirpur upazila of Barisal Friday night (Sep 11).

Confirming the matter, Barisal additional superintendent of police (ASP) Humayun Kabir said five people including former UP member Taimul Islam Panna, Ayub Ali, Harishat Roy were detained and interrogated by cops from Friday night to Saturday noon.

Moreover, Jalla union’s Kurulia police outpost in-charge sub-inspectors (SI) Mizan and AB Yusuf were withdrawn to police line, the ASP added.

Meanwhile, locals have set ablaze a three-storey building, vandalized several shops and staged demonstrations in different places of Ujirpur upazila over the incident.
