JESSORE: Benapole Customs House has directed authorities to keep the port open for 24 hours during Ramadan to make the market of imported essentials stable.

However, Muslim employees of the port will get interval during the times of Iftar and Sehri while non-muslims employees will carry on duty to keep the port open.

A letter signed by Benapole Customs Commissioner Moahmmad Belal Hossain was sent to various trades related offices in the port on Monday morning (May 21).

It has been known that a 7-day 24-hour trade system was started between Benapole and India’s Petrapole ports in last year to speed up the marketing of imported products. However it was shutdown few days later due to different obstacles. Currently a 6-day 24-hour trade system is active in Benapole port. Export and import remain closed in special government holidays.

Local businessmen said around 75 percent of commodities are imported and exported by road through Benapole port as the transportation system is easier this way. It takes only 4 fours for a cargo truck to reach Benapole port from India’s kolkata and the timing is similar for a truck travel in the reverse direction. The government is securing approximately Tk 8,000 core revenue from this port.

Benapole port director (traffic) Aminul Islam told Banglanews that all departments of the port were directed to speedup cargo load-unload during Ramadan.
