DHAKA: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-9) claims that they have discovered primary reason of the assault on Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal.

RAB-9 captain Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed told Banglanews on Sunday (March 04).

Haider Azad Ahmed said, “The attacker regained his sense after giving treatment at hospital.”

After interrogation by RAB personnel, the attacker said, “Zafar Iqbal is an atheist; an enemy to Islam. That’s why he attacked him.” 

Captain Lt Col Ali Haider Azad also said that the attacker will be interrogated further to find out if he is involved in a militant group.

The attacker was identified as Fayzur Rahman, son of Hafiz Atiqur Rahman, from Kalaiya Kapon area of Derai upazila of Sunamganj district.

His father is a teacher of Toker Bazar Women's madrasa in Sylhet, on the outskirts of Sylhet.

Fayzur Rahman was schooled in madrasa education. He lived in Sheikh Para area under Kumargaon of Sylhet Sadar Upazila.

Fayzur Rahman stabbed Iqbal from behind while he was attending the concluding ceremony of a festival of Electrical Electronics Engineering (EEE) department at the Mukto Mancha of Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST) at around 5:40pm Saturday (March 3).

Fayzur Rahman was lynched by students following the attack. Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.

Later, RAB detained Fayzur Rahman’s uncle Abdul Kahar Lului, 55, from his house at Kalaiya Kapon area under Derai upazila of Sunamganj district.
