HC denies bail to Sohel Rana

DHAKA: The High Court has accepted a petition filed by Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza garment factory that collapsed in 2013 killing 1,134 people, against a lower court verdict that sentenced him three years in jail in a graft case.

A single HC bench of Justice Abu Bakar Siddique accepted the petition for further hearing, however denied bail to Sohel Rana in the case on Wednesday (Nov 15).  

In the case, a lower court sentenced Sohel Rana to three years in prison for not submitting his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Lawyer Khurshid Alam moved for the ACC while Jahanara Begum moved for Sohel Rana in court.

After the HC order, Lawyer Khurshid Alam said the court has admitted Rana’s appeal and stayed the amount he was fined. However, the court denied bail for him.

On August 29 in 2017, a Dhaka Court sentenced three years imprisonment to Rana in a corruption case and also fined him Tk 50,000, and an additional three-month jail in default.

On May 21 in 2015, the ACC filed a case with Ramna Police Station.against Sohel Rana on charge of accumulating wealth illegally.
