Supreme Court upholds Azhar’s death penalty

DHAKA: The Supreme Court on Thursday (Oct 31) upheld the death penalty of Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

A four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, pronounced the verdict this morning.

The Appellate Division earlier fixed Oct 31 for delivering the judgment on an appeal filed by the war criminal challenging his death sentence.

On December 30 in 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 awarded Jamaat’s assistant secretary general ATM Azharul Islam to death for his crimes committed in Rangpur during the Liberation War.
