State challenges Minni’s bail

DHAKA: The state on Sunday (Sept 1) filed an appeal with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on High Court order that granted conditional bail to Ayesha Siddika Minni over her husband Rifat Sharif murder case in Barguna.

Sufia Khatun has been Advocate on record in the petition. The application was submitted to the concerned branch of the Appellate Division on Sunday (September 1).

Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, chamber judge of the Appellate Division, could hear the petition, lawyers said.

Earlier on August 29, the High Court granted conditional bail to Ayesha Siddiqa Minni in a case filed over the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif.

In response to a rule, an HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahimn and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman granted the bail on Thursday (August 29).

On Wednesday (August 28), the same HC bench fixed this day (August 29) after hearing the rule issued on August 20 in the case.

Advocate Z Khan Panna moved for Minni while Deputy Attorney General Sarowar Hossain Bappi stood for the state.

Senior Advocate Monsurul Hoque Chowdhury placed his expert opinion for the bail petition.

On August 20, HC issued a rule upon the authority concerned to explain within a week why Ayesha Siddiqa Minni, wife of slain Barguna youth Rifat Sharif, should not be granted bail.

The HC bench also asked the investigating officer of the case to appear before the HC with a CD (case docket) on August 28.

In addition, the Superintend of Police (SP) was asked to submit a written statement regarding the press conference held about Minni’s involvement.

Earlier on Monday (August 19), the HC bench wanted to know when Ayesha Siddiqa Minni was-- arrested, taken to court, and interrogated. It also asked to date when Superintend of Police (SP) had held the press conference about her involvement.

Earlier, lawyers of Ayesha Siddiqa Minni took the bail petition back from the HC in the case filed over the murder of Barguna youth Rifat Sharif.

Lawyers did it when an HC bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman was about to issue a rule on bail.

Judge Md. Asaduzzaman of district and sessions judge’s court of Barguna rejected the bail petition of Ayesha Siddiqa Minni on July 30.

Ayesha Siddiqa Minni was arrested for her alleged involvement in the murder as well for the sake of proper investigation of the case.

22-year-old Rifat Sharif, from Barguna sadar upazila, was hacked to death indiscriminately by Minni's alleged former husband Nayan Bond and his aides in broad daylight in front of Barguna Government College on June 26.

A shocking video of the brutal attack went viral on the social media, sparking widespread outrage and demand for justice from the countrymen.
