2 get life term for killing Jhenaidah woman

JHENAIDAH:  A district court awarded death penalty to two persons including the husband for killing a woman in Maheshpur upazila of the district.

Judge MG Azam of additional district and sessions judge’s court of Jhenaidah delivered the verdict on Monday (August 19).

The court also fined them Taka 10,000 each. Otherwise, one year of jail sentence will be applicable.

According to case statement, Monowara Khatun, who hailed from Keshobpur village of Maheshpur upazila, was married to Uzzal Hossen of Kanaidanga village of the same upazila. Family members of her in-laws would often torture Monowara Khatun for dowry. At one stage, Monowara’s family members brought her back home and filed two cases against the husband and members of his family.

Afterwards, Uzzal came to Keshobpur on June 29 of 2001, summoned Monowara out of her residence, and murdered her. On July 1, police recovered Monowara’s body from a canal in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga.

On July 6, Shahidul Islam, father of the deceased, filed a case against 8 persons with Maheshpur Police Sation.
