9th Wage Board: Govt seeks stay on HC order

DHAKA: The government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking stay on the High Court order that issued status quo on publication of gazette notification on implementing the recommendation of 9th wage board for journalists.

Later on Wednesday (August 14), Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC, Justice Md Nuruzzaman, fixed August 19 for hearing the petition filed by the state and sent it to the full bench for hearing on that day.

Earlier on August 6, the High Court ordered the authorities concerned to maintain a status-quo for two months on implementation of the gazette notification of the 9th wage board for journalists.

The bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Mohammad Ali passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Matiur Rahman, president of Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB).

It also issued a rule asking why the finalisation of the ninth Wage Board Award without publishing recommendations of the Wage Board Award committee and submission of the final recommendations to the government should not be declared illegal.

Earlier, Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader said the recommendations for implementing the Ninth Wage Board will be sent to the Cabinet and it will take the final decision once the Prime Minister returns home.
