Three MPs spark controversy

DHAKA: Three lawmakers have sparked off controversy for their alleged involvement in money laundering, extortion and woman persecution.

While the government is busy with various initiatives to protect people's lives and livelihood during the coronavirus pandemic, the trio is being involved in controversial activities.

They are -- Mohammad Shahid Islam Papul, an MP from Laxmipur-2 constituency (independent), Naimur Rahman Durjoy, an MP from Manikganj-1 constituency (Awami League), and MP Enamul Haque of Rajshahi 4 constituency (Awami League).

Papul has tarnished image of the country and its people, as Kuwait government arrested him on charge of laundering money and human trafficking. He has also been placed on remand in that country.

A number of expatriates in Kuwait and Middle East countries are facing stigma due to the offence committed by Papul.

Meanwhile, Enamul Haque is facing allegation of persecution of woman. A woman claiming to be his second wife gave a facebook post recently putting the ruling party in awkward situation.  She accused him of marrying her secretly and killing her foetus afterwards.

Ayesha Akter Liza, the complainant, said she is ready to go any length to prove the allegation.

Former cricketer Naimur Rahman Durjoy is allegedly engaged in various crimes and corruption in his constituency causing great sufferings for the people.

Sources and aggrieved people said the lawmaker has been indulging in extortion, land grading, abuse of power and nepotism. Many of his relatives are hand in gloves.

Several leaders of the ruling Awami League and political analysts said lawmakers are totally indifferent towards the crisis of the country caused by Covid-19.

The lawmakers are expected to have political wisdom and guards to behave accordingly. But, the trio is an exception. They are weakening the country’s efforts by disdainful activities.
