Atiq takes office as DNCC mayor for second term

DHAKA:  Atiqul Islam took office as mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) for the second term on Wednesday afternoon (May 13).

DNCC Panel Mayor Jamal Mostafa handed over charge to Atiqul Islam in an ordinary programme.

Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh will take charge as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Saturday.

The Awami League’s Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam clinched sweeping victories over the BNP’s Ishraque Hossain and Tabith Awal respectively at the recent mayoral elections.

The ruling party-nominated candidates emerged victorious at both city corporation polls held on February 1, though with only 30% of voters registered.

Though the newly-elected mayors and councillors of DNCC and DSCC took oath for office on February 26, they had to wait until completion of the tenures of incumbent mayors.
