DHAKA: Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar on Wednesday (Dec 25) said that the freedom of the Election Commission (EC) is confined to its election system.

He said: "The Election Commission is legally independent, but in reality this freedom is confined to the election process. That’s why a reform in the election process is needed.”

Mahbub Talukdar was speaking at a workshop on elections to Dhaka city corporations organized at the Election Training Institute at the EC in the capital.  

If the election is a prerequisite for democracy, the election should be held in free, fair and neutral manner to make the journey of democracy smooth, he said, adding that illegally elected public representatives have no commitments to the people or to democracy.
