HC asks Fakhrul, 3 other BNP leaders to surrender

DHAKA: The High Court asked BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and three other leaders to surrender before the lower courts concerned within six weeks in the case filed on charge of issuing death threat to the plaintiff and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman Tuesday (August 6) passed the order after hearing of the petition seeking anticipatory bail.

The court also ordered law enforcers not to arrest them or any kind of harassment in the case during the period.

Earlier in the morning, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and three other leaders of BNP sought anticipatory bail from High Court in the case, lawyer Sagir Hossain Lion told Banglanews on Tuesday (August 6). 

Three other senior BNP leaders are Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy.

A Dhaka court on Monday (August 5), issued arrest warrants against BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and seven other leaders, hours after filing of a case. 

Earlier in the day, a case was filed against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and seven other leaders on charge of issuing death threat to the plaintiff and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

AB Siddique, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a pro-Awami league organisation, on Monday (August 5) filed the case with the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabroto Shikder in Dhaka.

The seven others are BNP leaders are Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP chairperson's advisor Aman Ullah Aman, suspended BUET teacher Hafizur Rahman Rana and Chhatra Dal leader Emdadul Haque Bhuiyan.

In the case, the plaintiff alleges that Hafizur Rahman Rana, an expelled teacher of BUET, sent him a letter on July 25 this year.

In the letter, according to the case statement, teacher threatened the assassination of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, family members of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the plaintiff with Islamic State (IS) on August 15.

It also mentioned that the memorial complex of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would be destroyed by bombing. It has been said that a new Bangladesh will be established under the leadership of Tarique Rahman.

AB Siddique has sought a warrant to the court to arrest the accused, claiming that Tarique Rahman has contracted with IS. After taking statement of the plaintiff, the court said order would be given later.
