DHAKA:  The government cannot avoid the liability for Chawkbazar tragedy, said Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.

“The government is not sitting idle. Rather, it is working so that such an occurrence does not repeat,” Quader told reporters after visiting victims of Chawkbazar inferno at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Friday (February 22).

Obaidul Quader, also the minister for road transport & bridges, said life has more risks than livelihood here. Therefore, chemical warehouses must not be allowed here.

Quader also said earlier steps were taken to remove chemical warehouses following Nimtali tragedy, but there was lax in close monitoring. That’s why warehouses were set up again.

67 people were killed in Chawkbazar inferno till reporting.

The fire broke out at a chemical warehouse in Chawkbazar area of Old Dhaka around 10:45 pm on Wednesday (February 20).
