Sirajganj flooded again as Jamuna flowing above danger mark

SIRAJGANJ: The low lands of Sirajganj region have been flooded again as Jamuna River continued to swell due to onrush of upstream water and heavy rainfalls.

In just a period of 10 days, the water level of Jamuna has crossed well over the danger mark at Kazipur and Sirajganj points.

The second wave of flooding stranded thousands of people in five upazilas of the district. Many households and schools in the low lying areas were inundated by Monday (July 13).
The fresh flood also damaged livestock and crops.

Sirajganj Water Development Board Sub-Divisional Engineer AKM Rafiqul Islam told Banglanews that the water level of Jamuna River rose to 31cm at Kazipur point in the last 24 hours and flowing 26cm above the danger mark.

Meanwhile, the river is flowing above 20cm above the danger mark at Sirajganj point, he said.

Rafiqul also said the water level of Jamuna will continue to rise in the next 72 hours according to prediction made by Flood Forecasting and Warning Center.

Earlier on mid-June, Jamuna water level rose over danger marks at Sirajganj and Kazipur points flooding low lands in Sirajganj. The water level started to recede from July 2. However, the river has started to swell again.
