Govts urged to share innovations, strategies to overcome COVID impacts

DHAKA: Speakers at a webinar on Sunday (June 21) suggested the governments to share their innovations and strategies to overcome the health and economic impacts in the post-COVID era.

They also requested all the nations to help each other for restarting the economy boosting their businesses and trades to tackle the pandemic.

Economists, journalists, and academicians from New Zealand, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Singapore and Bangladesh took part at the webinar titled “COVID-19: Lessons from Successful Countries”. 

The webinar was organized by the Knowledge to Wisdom (k2w.com.bd), a local data and knowledge sharing platform, on Sunday in Dhaka.

The seminar was spoken among others by Dr Syed Abul Hasan, teacher of the Massey University of New Zealand, Ms Kanlayawee Weawkalyhong, a TV journalist from Thailand, Mr Ifham Nizam, senior journalists from The Island newspaper in Sri Lanka and Dambar K Ghimiray, Mass Communication and Journalism teacher at Royal Thimphu College of Bhutan took part at the discussion.

The discussants shared the experiences of their respective countries to curb the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic. 

Dr Hasan said the countries across the world especially in the regions should emphasis on expanding their trade and businesses through simplifying the tax and fiscal measures for each other.

He suggested Bangladesh government to act properly to the health issues as well as expanding the social safety-nets for the jobless people.

Mr Ghimiray of Bhutan said the innovations and best practices of the countries should be transmitted and adopted by the governments to tackle the impact on the economy.

Ms Kanlayawee said Thailand has applied best health services and policy of shutdown through a proper way which helps people to restrict the spreading of the Coronavirus.

Mr Nizam of Sri Lanka said the emergency and curfew had given a best result in his country which other countries can follow.

He has stressed the need for collaboration among the countries to restart the economy helping each other through their best practices and innovations.

The programme was moderated by FHM Humayan Kabir, a senior journalist from Bangladesh.
