Jamuna boat capsize: Total 10 deaths as 5 more bodies recovered

SIRAJGANJ: Death toll from the boat capsize in Jamuna River near Chauhali of Sirajganj reached 10 as five more bodies were recovered on Thursday (May 28). 

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Chauhali Dewan Moudud Ahmmed said member of Fire Service recovered the bodies from Kawlia Char, Poylar Char and Sthal Char areas in the morning while another body was recovered from Jotpara area of Khash Kawlia union of Chauhali this noon.

The body of Alam Miah, son of Nur Mohammad Miah of Gobindah village in Singair upazila of Manikganj district, was recovered from the Sthal Char, he said.

The identities of others could not be known immediately. 

Seven more people were still missing since the incident, UNO added.

Earlier, five bodies were recovered after the boat capsized in the Jamuna River.

The engine-run-boat with over 73 passengers on board was heading towards Chauhali from Enayetpur. A number of passengers managed to swim ashore immediately after the boat had capsized around 1:30 pm near Sathalchar village of the upazila, Chauhali Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Rashedul Islam Biswas earlier told Banglanews.

Police and locals then immediately rescued 54 passengers and later recovered three bodies. 

The deceased have been identified as Pashan Fakir, 65, son of late Zahir Fakir from Gounakandi village of Belkuchi upazilla, Naimul Islam, 4, son of Shamim Hossain of Kalagachhi village and Sheikh Kamal Mollah, 45, son of late Majid Mollah from Subarnatali village of Nagorpur upazilla in Tangail district, Afzal, 32, son of Abdur Rashid in Koizuri area in Shahajadpur upazila and an unidentified youth aged about 30.
