Formalities to execute verdict of Bangabandhu's killer Majed begins

DHAKA: Law Minister Anisul Huq has said formalities have now begun to execute the verdict against Bangabandhu murder convict Abdul Majed.

He said the verdict would be executed as soon as the formalities are over.

The minister came up with the development in a video message from his Gulshan residential office in the capital on Tuesday (April 7).

In response to a question whether Majed could pose a risk of coronavirus in prison, the law minister said, “Abdul Majed was arrested from Mirpur. As a death row convict, he will be kept in solitary confinement (separate cell) in jail. So there will be no risk of coronavirus spread from the isolated cell.”

Anisul Huq also said Abdul Majed was directly involved in the conspiracy and murder of Bangabandhu. After getting the evidence against him, the trial court and the appellate division sentenced him to death.

A specialised police unit overnight arrested the suspended captain Abdul Majed, who had been on the run for long 23 years, from Mirpur in the capital early Tuesday.

Majed is one of the six absconding ex-army officers who were handed down capital punishment after trial in absentia.

A magistrate court, meanwhile, sent him to jail minutes after he was produced on the dock at Old Dhaka’s Court Complex.

Majed was brought to the court at around 12.15pm . . . Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate AM Zulfikar Hayat passed his order at 12.55pm asking police to send him to jail, sources said.

Twelve ex-military officers were sentenced to death for killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members.

Five of the death row convicts were executed at Dhaka Central Jail on January 28, 2010 while one died a natural death as he was on the run abroad.
