Govt signs deal with UN Volunteers to develop human capital

DHAKA: The government on Monday (Feb 17) signed an agreement with the UN Volunteers Programme aiming to develop human capital.

The agreement signed by Sultana Afroz, Additional Secretary and Wing Chief (UN), Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Bangladesh government; and for the United Nations Volunteers Programme Shalina Miah, Regional Head of Asia and the Pacific.

The total cost of project is US$ 6,50,000 for 10 no. International UN Volunteers where Bangladesh government will be donor of this project for three years. Through the UNV Full Funding Programme, funding partners, host UN partners and UNV offer UN Volunteers an opportunity to share knowledge and gain experience as well as contributing to the SDGs as part of the UN system while addressing a range of development challenges around the world.

The UNV Full Funding Programme represents a win-win situation for UN Volunteers, funding partners and UN agencies and host communities alike. Through the programme, fully funded UN Volunteers are able to make direct contributions to support transformative change at the international and local levels. Traditionally, governments funded their own nationals for UN Volunteer assignments abroad. Then, Germany and Luxembourg expanded their funding to UN Volunteers from the global South to serve in other countries, as well as national UN Volunteers to serve in their own countries.

With this partnership thought the Fully Funded programme with UNV, Bangladesh is going to be a champion country, who supports Fully Funded UNV as being the first LDC country entering in such programme. This is also the first time that UNV is going to engage civil servants as Fully Funded UNV with UN entities.

This MoU will help get benefits by supporting development of Bangladesh human capital and sharing talent with and export knowledge of Bangladesh nationals to other countries.
