“Sir Abed’s philosophy was to uplift education” Late Sir Fazle Hasan Abed

DHAKA: Mentioning that Brac founder Sir Fazle Hasan Abed had worked throughout his life towards bringing a qualitative change of people’s lives, speakers said that’s why his philosophy was to uplift the education.

Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury said: “University, which is one of the institutions, can contribute to ensure qualitative change in the society. From that concept, he set up a university.”

Eminent economist Professor Rehman Sobhan said:” Fazle Hassan Abed wanted to bring change in people's lives--that was a qualitative change in human life. Therefore, he implemented whatever he wanted to do.”

They were addressing a discussion on the life and works of Brac founder Sir Fazle Hasan Abed organized by Gyantapas Abdur Razzaq Foundation on Thursday (January 16) at Dhaka University's Prof Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium in the afternoon, said a press release.

Prof Rehman Sobhan, chairman of Centre for Policy Dialogue, presided over the programme, where National Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury was present as the chief guest.

Besides, former governor of Bangladesh Bank Salehuddin Ahmed; Brac Chairperson Hossain Zillur Rahman; Campaign for Popular Education Executive Director Rasheda K Choudhury and several other distinguished personalities were also present at the programme discussing Sir Abed’s contributions to the society.

Salehuddin Ahmed said Sir Abed used to give top priority to education. He used to listen to people at all times.

Rasheda K Choudhury said: “Abed was a very far-sighted person.  He gave utmost importance to research in solving any problem.”

“There are many challenges in education, do not give up,” Rasheda K Chowdhury quoted Sir Abed. She also said a dying person was talking about education instead of pains of death.

Dr. Manzoor Ahmed said the periphery of Sir Abed's work was vast and his philosophy was to go ahead with education.

Hossain Zillur Rahman said Sir Abed’s thoughts had centered upon development of people. He worked on the concept of multidimensional education. Even after demise, we will work on his path.

Fazle Hasan Abed, who passed away at a hospital in the city on December 20 last year, was also a member of the trustee board of Razzaq Foundation.

Colleagues, friends, relatives and well-wishers of Sir Abed participated in the discussion, the press release said.
