‘Drug trader’ killed in Teknaf 'gunfight'

COX’S BAZAR: A suspected drug dealer was killed in an alleged gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila of the district early Tuesday (Dec 10).

The incident took place near the bank of Naf river in Jadimura village in Hnila union of the upazila around 4pm.

The deceased identified as Imam Hossain, 25, son of Abdus Salam hailed from Jadimura village. According to BGB, Imam was involved in drug trading.

Teknaf 2 BGB Battalion Commander Lt Colonel Md Faisal Hasan Khan told Banglanews that on information of a yaba consignment, which was arriving in Bangladesh from Myanmar by a boat through Naf river, a BGB team took position near the river.

When the boat appeared, the BGB member wanted to search. But the people on the boat opened fire at the law enforcement, forcing them to fire back in self-defence triggering a gunfight, the BGB official added.

At one stage of gunfight, the criminals fled the scene, and the BGB men later found the body of Imam on the spot, he also said.

The BGD men seized 120,000 yaba pills, some sharp weapons, firearms and ammunition from the spot, Faisal Hasan Khan said.
