DHAKA: Renowned academic Professor Ajoy Roy, father of slain blogger Avijit Roy, died at the capital’s BIRDEM hospital on Monday.

He was 85.

BIRDEM Director Brigadier General (retd) Shahidul Haque Mallik confirmed the matter. 

Sources said Ajoy was admitted to the hospital on November 25 with fever and difficulty in breathing. His health condition had been deteriorating from November 27, and he was moved to ICU that night.

As a founder of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Ajoy Roy played a key role in the movement for trial of war criminals. 

His son Avijit, a Bangladesh-born US citizen, was stabbed to death on Dhaka University campus when he, along with his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, was returning from the book fair on February 26, 2015. Bonya survived the attack.
