President, PM pay homage to Armed Forces martyrs

DHAKA: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to the martyred members of Bangladesh Armed Forces, who lost their lives in the Liberation War in 1971.

The President and the premiere paid the tributes by placing floral wreaths at the Shikha Anirban in Dhaka Cantonment at around 8:00am, marking Armed Forces Day Thursday (Nov 21).

They stood there in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to the martyred soldiers.

A smartly turned out contingent of three forces-- Army, Navy and Air Force-- presented a guard of honor as the bugle played the last post.

Later, they signed the visitors' book which has been kept at Shikha Anirban.

Both were greeted by the heads of army, air force and navy and the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division.

After the wreath-placing ceremony, the prime minister went to the Armed Forces Division (AFD) where the three chiefs of the armed forces made a courtesy call on her.

On this day during the War of Liberation in 1971, the Bangladesh Armed Forces, comprising Army, Navy and Air Force, came into being and launched an all-out attack on the Pakistani occupation forces which sped up the victory in the Liberation War.

After the independence of the country, this historic day is observed as the Armed Forces Day every year.
