Workers obstruct public transportation

CHATTOGRAM: City dwellers have been suffering since Wednesday (Nov 20) morning for shortage of vehicles as a section of transport workers obstructed driving public transports on roads.

Bangladesh Truck-Covered-van Goods Transport Owner-Worker Unity Council have been enforcing work abstention since morning, although owners and workers in over 20 districts already abstaining from operating buses over the past two days, Chattogram correspondent reports.

Besides, there was no vehicular movement from Olongkar Mor as they blocked Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Workers in the city's Halishahar, Barapole, Eidgaon, Mansurabad, the port connecting road obstructed the movement of private cars, tempo, CNG-run taxis and emergency goods-laden vans. 

Passengers were seen walking to work without getting a car.

Prime Mover Trailer Workers Union general secretary Abu Bakar Siddiqui said the Prime Mover, the container transport vehicle, was not in operation in support of the strike. The workers are observing work abstention, he added.

On October 22, the Road Transport and Highways Division issued a gazette, stating that the Road Transport Act (RTA) would be effective from November 1. Parliament had passed the RTA in September last year, replacing the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1983.

On November 17, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader declared the enforcement of the new Road Transport Act 2018.
