Lucrative items in Internet attract youths to militancy Monirul Islam, CTTC chief holding a press conference at DMP’s media centre

DHAKA:  Monirul Islam, chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan police (DMP), said now young people are being attracted to militancy through various interesting and lucrative proposals in the internet world.

He came up with this opinion at a function at DMP media center on Saturday (October 19).

The event was organized by the Center for Social Advocacy and Research Foundation (CSARF) to launch a program called 'Dhaka Peace Talk'.

Financed by USAID, CTTC will fully support the program.

As regards some of the militants arrested recently, he said some of them had already been involved in militancy while some are new to it. Young people are being attracted to various lucrative packages, of militancy groups, on the internet militant. Those who have-- no sense of responsibility, less patriotism, or the ones who are weak in ideology, unable to adapt to realities and are mentally weak are being radicalized.

Speaking about 'Dhaka Peace Talk,' he said terrorism is a global problem. Although Bangladesh is a non-communal country, it has been at risk of terrorism at various times. Violent and extremist activities are a long-term process. To prevent extremism, not only the police but also the familes, civil society and all should make a concerted effort.

CSARF chief and Associate Professor of Dept. Mass Communication and Journalism at Dhaka University Shabnam Azim also spoke at the function.
