UN asked to explain its statement over Fahad murder

DHAKA: Bangladesh has sought explanation of the United Nation over its statement on the murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad.

The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday has summoned UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka Mia Seppo regarding the issue

Seppo met with the foreign ministry's Director General of the UN Wing Nahida Sobhan in the morning.

Mia Seppo was summoned for her explanation regarding the UN's statement over the incident.

However, Mia Seppo did not speak to reporters while leaving the Foreign Ministry.

Earlier on October 9, the United Nations in a statement has condemned the horrific killing of an engineering student at the dormitory of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in Dhaka.

“The UN deplores the killing of a young BUET student, allegedly for freely expressing his views. Campus violence in Bangladesh has over the years affected and claimed too many lives, with apparent impunity for those bearing responsibility,” the UN Resident Coordinator’s office in Dhaka said.

“The UN Bangladesh notes steps taken by the authorities to apprehend alleged perpetrators. It encourages independent investigations that should lead to justice being served in a fair process, and measures to ensure prevention of further incidents."

Abrar Fahad, a second year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of BUET was allegedly beaten to death at his dorm Sher-e-Bangla Hall early Monday (Oct 7).

The body of Fahad was found lying between the first and second floors of Sher Bangla Hall.

Later on that day, police arrested 10 BCL leaders of its Buet unit over the alleged involvement in the killing of fellow student Abrar Fahad.

On Tuesday (Oct 8), a Dhaka court placed ten leaders of BCL on a five-day remand and fixed November 13 for submission of probe report of the case filed over the murder of Abrar Fahad.
