2 killed in N’ganj, Gazipur ‘gunfights’

DHAKA: Two people, including a murder accused and a suspected robber, were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Narayanganj and Gazipur early Wednesday (September 18).

In Narayanganj, Tuhin Hossain, 23, resident of Deobhokg Shantinagar area in Fatulla upazila, was killed in a “gunfight” with Rab in Saidpur area of Sadar upazila around 4:00am, hours after he was arrested, Major Talukder Nazmus Sakib, Crime Prevention Special Company Commander and Rab-11 deputy commander, told our correspondent.

Tuhin, who was accused in multiple cases, including murder, drug and firearms, was arrested around 1:00am from Rasulpur area of Cumilla, he said.

Based on his information about drug dealing and firearms, police raided the area along with Tuhin. But sensing the presence of the law enforcers, his accomplices fired back forcing the police to retaliate starting a “gunfight”, the OC said.

At one stage, Tuhin came in the line of fire and was hit by a bullet. He was taken to Narayanganj General Hospital in a critical condition where doctors declared him dead, the Rab official said.

Two Rab officers were injured in the “gunfight”, he added.

Police recovered foreign made guns loaded with bullets and locally made guns from the spot, the police official said.

Police filed two cases in connection with the incident, he added.

In Gazipur, Masud Parvez, 32, a suspected robber, was killed in a reported gunfight with Rab in Sreepur upazila, assistant superintendent of police Md Kamruzzman of Rab-1 said

He was son of later Azizul Haque of Bormi area in the upazila.

Being tipped off that a gang of robbers are preparing for robber in Daulatpur area, a team of Rab-1 conducted drives in the area in Sreepur in the early hours of today, he added. 

As the policemen reached Daulatpur, gang of robbers, who were staying there, opened fire on them forcing the law enforcers to retaliate with bullets, he said.

Parvez was shot when he tried to flee while his cohorts managed to flee, the Rab official said.

The alleged criminal was taken to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, he said.

Police recovered a foreign made pistol, six one-shooter guns, one short gun and two bullets from the spot, said, adding that Parvez was accused in multiple cases filed on different charges.
