DHAKA:  Some 420 Rohingya refugees have already been trafficked from Cox’s Bazar areas despite monitoring on their movement, according to an assessment of the International Organization for Migration.

Common people are also being trafficked from Bangladesh alongside Rohingya refugees.  Rohingya exodus began in 2017, IOM said as it presented a paper at a consultative workshop at a hotel in Dhaka on Saturday (September 15).

Foreign secretary M Shahidul Haque spoke at the workshop in presence of Abu Bakar Siddique, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mia Seppo, Resident Coordinator of UN and others.

M Shahidul Haque said: “Bangladesh has decided to sign the UN Palermo Protocol.  This way, hopefully, we will play a role in preventing human trafficking.”

“Immigration and human trafficking are two completely different things," he said adding that “We are against human trafficking, but in favor of safe immigration.”

Mia Seppo said they welcome Bangladesh’s decision to sign the UN Palermo Protocol. The UN is ready to provide all kinds of assistance to implement the process.
