23 killed in countrywide road accidents

DHAKA: A total of 23 people were killed and about 70 people injured in separate road accidents across the country on Thursday (August 15).

Of those accidents, picnic bus plunge claimed lives of eight holidaymakers in Feni while four in Faridpur, three in Kishoreganj, two each in Sirajganj and Mymensingh, one each in Gopalganj, Barishal, Kishoreganj, Bhola and Tangail.

In Feni, eight persons were killed and at least 20 others injured as a picnic bus hit a tree beside Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Lemua area around 7am.

Sources said the eight died on the spot when the bus leaving Dhaka bound to Cox's Bazar hit the tree after losing control. 

Feni's Mohipal Highway Police Station In-Charge Md Shahjahan Khan confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

Seven of the deceased were identified as Apu, 35 from Bikrampur, Iqbal, 38, from Mirpur, Ripon, 30, from Madaripur, Munna Khan, 30 from Narayanganj and Shamim, 30 from Mirpur.

Seventeen of the injured have been shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment, said Feni Adhunik Sadar Hospital physician Nazmul Huq Shammi.

In Faridpur, Three people, including a bus driver, were killed and 31 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Dhaka-Barishal highway in Bhanga upazila.

Two of the deceased were identified as Raushan Fakir, 35, driver of the local bus and a resident of Nagarkanda Upazila of Faridpur and passenger Mira Kundu, 60 who hailed from Rajbari Sadar.

Ataur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Bhanga Highway Police Station, told Banglanews that the accident took place when a Saidpur-bound bus of Tuhin Paribahan collided head on with a local bus in Naopara area this morning, leaving two people dead on the spot and 32 others injured.

Of the 32 injured, 14 persons were taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where another succumbed to his injuries.

Rests were undergoing treatment at Bhanga upazila health complex, the OC added.

Additionally, a young man Abdus Sattar Molla, 30, was killed after being hit by a motorbike in Sadarpur upazila of Faridpur, said Syed Lutfur Rahman, officer in charge of Sadarpur police station.

In Kishoreganj, Three people were killed and four others injured as a truck rammed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Katiadi upazila this morning.

Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. All were passengers of the auto-rickshaw. 

Nasir Uddin, officer in-charge of Katiadi Highway Police Station, said the accident took place in Achmita area on Kishoreganj-Bhoirab regional road around 8:00am. 

The four injured were taken to Katiadi Upazila Health Complex.

In Sirajganj, three buses have had a collision together at Konabari in Kamarkhanda upazila, killing two passengers on the spot while injuring at least thirty.

The accident occurred on west road of Bangabandhu Bridge around 2:45 pm on Thursday (August 30).

“Police and fire service personnel, after being informed, are undertaking rescue operation,” Jahurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge West Police Station, told Banglanews.

In Mymensingh, two persons, including a child, were killed and five others injured following a collision between a bus and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw in Phulpur upazila.

The accident happened on Dhaka-Haluaghat upazila at noon.

The deceased were named as Jayed, 6 and Sirajul Islam, 45. The injured were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).

The killer bus was caught, but the driver fled the spot, Imarot Hossen Gazi, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Phulpur Police Station, told Banglanews.

In Gopalganj, a motorcyclist Tuhin Molla, 32, was killed and his wife injured as a private car hit the vehicle in Gopalpur area of Kashiani upazila this afternoon, Prokash Sarker, sub inspector of Kashiani police station told Banglanews.

In Barishal, a motorbike rider Abul Hasnat Russel was killed and another injured as a bus ran over the vehicle in Natun hat area of Babuganj upazila this noon, Dibakar Chandra Das, officer in charge of Babuganj police station told Banglanews.

In Tangail, a college student Ishtiak Ahemd, 17, was killed as a pickup van rammed into his motorbike in Sakhipur upazila this morning. 

In Bhola, a child Parvez, 6, was killed after a human hauler ran over him on Bhola-Ilisha road this morning, said Ratan Kumar Sheel, in charge of Ilisha Polcie investigation center.
