 ‘Robber kingpin’ killed in Noakhali ‘gunfight’

NOAKHALI: An alleged local robber kingpin was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion in Subornachar upazila in the early hours of Monday (June 24).

The deceased was Fakir Batanya, 42, son of Mostafa Batanya from Ramgoti upazila of Laxmipur and the kingpin of a robbery gang named Fakir bahini, Rab said.

Tipped off, a team of Rab-11 conducted drive at the house of Fakir Batanya near to Kanchon Bazar of Subarnachar upazila to arrest him at dawn, Sub Inspector Sagor of CPC-2 Laxmipur camp of Rab 11, told Banglanews.
 
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, robbers opened fire on them that forced police to retaliate with gunfire.

At one stage of the gunfight, robber kingpin Fakir was wounded after being hit by bullets. Fakir was taken to Char Jabber Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctor declared him dead.

A foreign made pistol loaded with bullets was recovered from the spot. 

“Two Rab members were injured during the battle. They received first aid treatments at a local hospital,” the Rab official said.

According to him, Fakir Batanya was accused in multiple cases including the charges of murder.
