CHAPAINAWABGANJ: A district court has awarded death penalty to nine persons and life imprisonment to two others for killing Jubo League leader Monirul Islam in Shibganj upazila in 2014.
Judge Shawkot Ali of additional district and sessions judge’s court of Chapainawabganj delivered the verdict in presence of 8 convicts on Thursday (June 20).
Three of the convicts are absconding.
Nine death-row convicts were fined Tk 2 lakh each same as two convicts of life imprisonments. Two lifers will also face an additional year to the sentence for failure to pay it.
On the contrary, three persons were acquitted, because charges brought against them did not prove.
According to additional public prosecutor Anjuman Ara, the convicts called former treasurer of C&F Agent Association Monirul out of his home in Sialmara village around 1:30pm on October 14 of 2014.
Following day, he was shot dead. The very next day, his wife-Rahima Begum-filed a case against 14 persons with Shibganj Police Station, Anjuman Ara added.
Later, on June 15 of 2015, police submitted charge sheet in the case.
According to case statement, Monirul was murdered to loot C&F Agent Association money and out of personal enmity.
After examining all the records and statements of 23 witnesses, the court handed down the verdict.
