Padma Bridge 13th span installation Saturday

MUNSHIGNAJ: The 13th span (superstructure) of the 6.15-km much-awaited Padma Bridge will now be installed at its Mawa end in Munshiganj on Saturday (May 25).

The span has not been installed between the pillars 14 and 15 of the bridge at Mawa end on Friday (May 24) due to bad weather, an engineer of the Padma Bridge construction, told Banglanews.

Engineering sources said that the span takes longer time to reach the pillars. After that, it will not be possible to finish the work by putting the span on those. So, installation of the span will begin from tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

The grey colour 3B span is 150 metres long and weighs 3,140 tonnes.

After the installation of the 13th span, 1,950 metres (1.95 kilometer) of the much-hyped bridge will be visible.

According to the concerned bridge authority, the 150 metres long span has been kept at outside the Mawa Construction Yard. The 3,600 ton capacity Tian E crane will carry the span from Mawa Construction Yard of Munshiganj to the spot.

Earlier, due to shortage of navigability and lack of lifting crane, the bridge authority changed the schedule of the installation of the span in several phases.

It is possible to place the span in one day. But if there is technical problem or adverse weather, it can take time till Saturday (May 25), the engineer added.

In a recent meeting, Obaidul Quader, road transport and bridges minister was informed about the progress of the Padma Bridge. Padma Bridge progress was 76 percent. In all, the project progress of Padma project is now 67%. 236 out of 262 piles driving of the main bridge ended.

A total of 41 spans (superstructure) will be installed on the 42 pillars to construct the 6.15-km much waited Padma Bridge. Railway slabs and roadway slabs are being installed on six spans at Jajira end.
