DHAKA: Customs officials arrested a Chinese national along with 48 gold bars, weighing 5.56 kilograms, at Shahjalal International Airport in the capital city on Sunday (March 24).
The detainee was identified as Ruan Jinfeng, 43, said customs sources.
The approximate value of the gold bars has bee estimated at Tk 2.79 crore, said Othello Chowdhury, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Customs House.
Being tipped-off, a team of Dhaka Customs challenged Ruan Jinfeng, passenger of an Emirates Airlines flight, while crossing the green channel of the airport and asked him whether he is carrying any taxable objects but he denied.
Later, after scanning his luggage, the officials found a rechargeable torch and found 48 gold bars, 10 tolas each, hidden inside it.
Earlier on March 13, two other Chinese nationals were also held at Dhaka airport on charges of gold smuggling hidden inside home solar system.
