Quader to undergo bypass surgery Wednesday

DHAKA: General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) Obaidul Quader, who has been undergoing treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore since March 4, will undergo a bypass surgery on Wednesday (Mar 20).

Prof Dr Abu Nasar Rizvi of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) disclosed the development at a briefing in Singapore. 

The surgery will be conducted at 10 am (Singapore time), he added. 

When contacted, Road, Transport and Highways division deputy chief information officer Md Abu Naser told the latest update to Banglanews on Tuesday (Mar 19) morning.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Sivathasan Cumaraswamy, a member of the medical board led by Dr Philip Koh formed for the treatment of Quader, will conduct the surgery.

Prof Dr Abu Nasar Rizvi, who stayed in Singapore, said blood pressure and diabetes of Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, is now under control. His physical condition is also stable. 

Quader’s family members sought doa from countrymen for his quick recovery.  

Earlier in the day, Dr Sivathasan Cumaraswamy informed family members of Quader about latest improvement of his health condition and date of surgery. 

On March 13, Quader has been shifted to cabin from the ICU of the hospital. 

Earlier on March 4, the minister who had been undergoing treatment at BSMMU Hospital since early Sunday (Mar 3) was taken to Singapore by an air ambulance as per advice of World renowned cardiologist Dr Devi Shetty.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader was admitted to the Critical Coronary Unit (CCU) of BSMMU Hospital after he felt breathing problems and chest pain.

He was diagnosed with blockages coronary arteries.
