DHAKA: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said apart from relocating chemical warehouses, affected and narrow roads of the densely populated Old Dhaka will be renovated.

“It’s unfortunate that chemical warehouses had not been relocated from Old Dhaka although the initiatives were taken in this regard”, PM Hasina was visiting the Chawkbazar fire victims at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday (Feb 23) morning. 

She reached the hospital around 10:30am and enquired about the treatment of burn victims and other injured in the fire incident as well as assured the family member of carrying treatment cost by the government.

“Unwillingness of relocating the chemical warehouses from Old Dhaka is unfortunate. The initiatives had already taken to remove those, but in reality it had stopped after some work was done” the premier said. 

Citing that measures will be taken to remove chemical warehouses from Old Dhaka, the Prime Minister sought cooperation from everyone regarding the matter. 

Calling the countrymen to remain alert about the fire incident, PM Hasina said everyone will have to be cautious so that such accidents will not happen in our country anymore. 

At least 67 people were killed and many injured in the fire that broke out at a chemical warehouse in Chawkbazar area of Old Dhaka around 10:45 pm on Wednesday (February 20).

The overnight rescue operation had been conducted under the direct supervision of the Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina. She was awake in the whole night and monitored the entire rescue operation, said Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sayeed Khokon on Thursday (Feb 21) while inspecting the spot.
 
A probe body was formed. Measures will be taken based on their report, he added.
