DHAKA: The housing and public works ministry on Tuesday (Feb 19) conducted slum eviction drives in Bhasantek area of Mirpur in the capital city.
During the drive led by executive magistrate Md Tazim-ur Rahman, at least 10,000 shanties were demolished in slums located in Damalcourt, Kazolertek, Nirob Road and Soukin road.
Rumana Islam, a tenant of Kazolertek slum, alleged that the government demolished their shanties without issuing any prior notice.
“We have been living here as tenants after independence. If they give time for two days, we could relocate our valuables”, she added.
Executive magistrate Md Tazim-ur Rahman told Banglanews that the eviction drive is being conducted to reclaim 10,000 acres land.
“Today, we evicted 50 percent shanties and illegal structures. The drive will also resume on Wednesday (Fen 20)”, he added.
