Dr Yunus gets time till Nov 7 to surrender

DHAKA: The High Court asked law enforcers not to arrest or harass Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus till November 7 in three cases filed on charge of sacking three employees of Grameen Communications.

The HC gave the time so that Dr Yunus can surrender without any harassment after arriving home through at Dhaka or Chittagong airport.

The HC bench of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the order on Monday (October 26th), hearing a writ petition filed by his brother.

Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud move for the petition in the court.

He said three people have filed three lawsuits in Labor Court against Dr Muhammad Yunus. In view of that, an arrest warrant has been issued against him. He was abroad when the cases were filed.

Earlier on Oct 9, a Dhaka labor court issued an arrest warrant against Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of Grameen Bank Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Nuruzzaman, bench-clerk of the court confirmed the matter to Banglanews on Wednesday (October 9).

Rahibul Islam, chairman of the 3rd Labour Court of Dhaka issued the warrant on Wednesday (October 9) for not responding to a court summon.

Three former employees of Grameen Communications on July 3 filed the case against Muhammad Yunus and two others for sacking them flouting a labor act.

The plaintiffs of the case are three junior MIS officers --Abdus Salam, Shah Alam, and Emranul Haque.

The two accused are Managing Director Naznin Sultana and Deputy General Manager Khandaker Abu Abedin.

Two of them appeared before the court, as they are supposed to stand before it today, and sought bail. The court granted them bail.

Muhammad Yunus’s lawyer told the court that Yunus is abroad on business purpose and he will appear before the court whenever he returns home. However, these grounds did not satisfy the court and an arrest warrant was issued.
