Why DIG Mizan not held yet: SC

DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) why Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman is not being arrested in the corruption case.

The Appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain raised such question to ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan Sunday (June 16).

During a leave to appeal hearing against HC bail to Hallmark Group Chairman Jasmine Islam, Judge questioned that Is DIG Mizan more powerful than ACC? Why you can not arrest him. Yes, why do not you arrest him? Why ACC do not arrest him in this case? '

Appellate Division of the Supreme Court cancelled the High Court bail given to Hallmark Group Chairman Jasmine Islam and ordered her to surrender within next four weeks, in a case over embezzling Janata Bank money.

Khurshid Alam Khan told reporters that Jasmine was granted bail by the High Court on March 10 this year, in a case filed over embezzling Tk 85,87,33,000 from Janata Bank by issuing fake L/C (letter of credit). Afterwards, ACC challenged the order at the Appellate Division.

Lawyers Mansurul Haque Chowdhury and Abdul Matin Khasru moved for Jasmine while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan moved for Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), at the courtroom.

Earlier on June 10, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has suspended its Director Khandaker Enamul Bachhir over leaking official information, breaching code of conduct and possessing illegal wealth.

Sources said that Bacchir made an agreement of Tk 50 lakh bribe from Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mizanur Rahman, to ensure impunity for him.

Bacchir also demanded a gas-fuelled car as a gift from the DIG.
