HC rule over compensation scheme for rape victims

DHAKA: The High Court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to form an outline project for compensating the rape victims vowing to rehabilitate them. 

The HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Md Khairul Alam issued the rule Tuesday (June 11) upon hearing a writ plea filed on public interest.

The HC asked why order won't be issued to form the scheme.

Besides, why directions won't be issued to protect children and women from sexual harassment and to bring the commuting vehicles on road under surveillance, the court asked further.    

In the rule, the HC also asked to know why order won't be issued to compensate two families of rape victims in Rajshahi and Narsingdi with Tk 50 lakh each.

The secretaries to home and women and children affairs ministries, health and family planning, road transport and highways division (RTHD), Bangladesh road transport authority (BRTA), legal assistance organization's chairman and director, inspector general of police (IGP), superintendents of police (SP)-Rajshahi and Kishoreganj, officers-in-charge (OCs) of Bajitpur and Mohonpur police stations have been asked the reply the rule within four weeks.
